Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities

NKR Nuclear

NKR has extensive experience in dismantling nuclear facilities, offering comprehensive services throughout the entire decommissioning process. Our services include project management, dismantling, radiation protection, decontamination, radiological free release, and recycling.

We utilize our large, modern machinery fleet and deep expertise in construction machinery to ensure efficient operations. Both NKR and our clients maintain high standards for health, safety, and the environment. We prioritize delivery, work environment, and safety in all our contracts.

Our dedicated team operates throughout Scandinavian and across Europe.

Dismantling

We combine competence and expertise in dismantling of nuclear facilities with many years of experience from conventional demolition. We employ a wide range of tools, from handheld devices and robots to our largest construction machine with a weight of 200 tons and a reach of 70 m.

We specialize in concrete cutting and diamond wire sawing in both rock and concrete.

The personnel possess a variety of skills; however, all of them hold Hot Work Permits, have completed Fall Safety Training, and received Mobile Platform Training. Additionally, some team members are certified to operate forklifts.

Project Management

We manage general contracts and provide expert Project Management Services for dismantling and demolition. Our Project Managers have experience in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and possess extensive knowledge of construction machinery. They are well-versed in handling regulatory requirements for nuclear installations.

Radiophysics services

Ionizing radiation is present in several operations, and with that comes an obligation to protect personnel, the public, and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation. We offer services to ensure that your procedures are approved, practical, and in compliance with legislation.

We perform ISOCS measurements, radiation measurements, and provide analyses and evaluations of radiation data. We support with plans and implementation of radiation protection measures.

We can assist with risk assessments and incident management in radiation-related events, and we can also assist with documentation matters.

Radiological Free Release

To minimize radioactive waste and increase the recycling rate, effective radiological free release processes are needed.

We know the regulations that govern the radiological free release process. We offer services in measurement technology and can assist you with procedures and the execution of the radiological free release of materials and facilities.

Construction Machinery

NKR has a modern fleet of machinery and experienced machine operators for the demolition of both conventional and nuclear facilities. We have machinery for both small and large contracts. Our fleet of machinery consists of:

  • Hydraulic excavators with all forms of attachments
  • Wheel loaders
  • Demolition robots
  • Mobile and tracked cranes
  • Various small machines
  • Various vehicles and trucks for general and heavy transport

Recycling

NKR Demolition aims to redefine traditional demolition with a focus on reuse and sustainability. We offer comprehensive dismantling services, including early-stage consulting to maximize reuse efforts. We also purchase radiologically free released waste to promote recycling. Reference project

Dismantling of Condensers

Oskarshamn and Barsebäck, Sweden

At O1 and O2, located on the Simpevarp Peninsula near Oskarshamn, as well as at B1 and B2 on the coast of Skåne, NKR has dismantled condensers.

The condenser is a component designed to condense steam. Each condenser consists of titanium tubes, with a total of 35,000 titanium pipes in each condenser, resulting in a total of 120,000 titanium pipes dismantled.

Additionally, auxiliary systems such as heat exchangers, piping, and high-pressure turbines were also dismantled. In total, 6,000 tons of steel were dismantled during the project.

The work was carried out between 2021 and 2022 and took approximately 18 months at each site.
